ARAGONA - COMITINI KM. 15
Aragona is a charming town, rich in history, nature, art and culture. The necropolis called Caldare and san Vincenzo date back from 3500 to 1300 B.C. and testify Aragona’s very old origins. Palazzo Naselli dates back to the eighteenth century and inside it is enriched with valuable frescos. Maccalube natural reserve is an important naturalistic treasure characterized by suggestive hydro-clayey springs. The constant spill of clay from the subsoil creates fascinating eruptive plays which gave rise to many popular beliefs. The sulphur mines of Aragona are historically very interesting. At the beginning of the twentieth century they had a great development and were admirably described in many novels by Luigi Pirandello

NARO KM. 20
Naro, the town of baroque, has a rich and valuable artistic and monumental wealth: churches, convents, old buildings, a castle which testify its glorious history and civilization and which preserve excellent and unique, but hardly known, works of art. The naturalistic beauties of Naro are important too: the ‘valle del paradiso’, one of the most impressive natural balconies of Sicily, san Giovanni lake and the pine wood, with their luxuriant fauna and flora, are an ideal frame to live in touch with nature.

SANT'ANGELO MUXARO - SAN BIAGIO PLATANI KM. 30/36
Sant’Angelo Muxaro is a characteristic little village rooted on a solitary hill. It was identified as the capital of the ancient kingdom of Sicani. According to the mythology Daedalus planned the town in order to thank Kokalos, king of Sicani, for the ospitality he received when he escaped from Minos. Archaeology is here very rich: graves, valuable jewels, ceramic vases, golden cups, funeral outfits of inestimable value, which testify the prestige reached by the old civilization of Sicani. With its nature trails, mule tracks and caves of great speleological interest, Sant’Angelo Muxaro is moreover a charming destination where you can enjoy a still uncontaminated nature. At about 4 km, sailing up Platani river, there is San Biagio Platani, a charming oasis of nature and traditions: an uncontaminated valley rich in flora and fauna, in farm houses where you can taste local products and where the old feast of Arches celebrates each Easter: the town is decorated with arches made of bread and other cereals depicting Jesus’ Calvary and Resurrection.

CALTABELLOTTA KM. 64
Caltabellotta is rooted on the slopes of a mountain, in front of a wonderful landscape. It is called the “crib town” because of its original Gothic type planning: little houses grouped together, wonderful portals, narrow alleys alternating with flights of steps, little stony roads and arches leading into charming squares. At Christmas the atmosphere is suggestive and joyful: the living Nativity scene is unique with its songs and music to celebrate past and present traditions.

BURGIO KM. 68
Burgio is an old medioeval village rich in history and culture: several hundred carved stony portals of the nineteenth-century, Norman churches decorated with statues of fine workmanship, a medioeval castle and convents of the sixteenth-century. Here you find Virgadamo foundry, born in the sixteenth century and unique in Sicily, which still melts the bronze according to the old tradition and exports bells all over the world. Pottery is important too: for ages a lot of workshops in town have been charming us with their lively colours and unique patterns. All the above together with the luxuriant natural reserve of Sicani wood makes burgio a first-class tourist attraction near Agrigento.

CAMMARATA - SANTO STEFANO QUISQUINA KM. 60
In the heart of Mount Sicani, in the territories between the towns of Cammarata and SSQ, there is the natural reserve of Mount Cammarata: luxuriant woods, very rare plants and birds, nature trails, equipped areas, cycle-tracks to enjoy a splendid nature. The area has a stud farm for horses of the breeds Franches.. and santa.. used by the personnel of Corps of Foresters for rescue service. In an oak wood, 986 metres above sea-level, there is the hermitage where St. Rosalia, daughter of the estate owner, lived from 1150 to 1162 before moving to Mount Pellegrino in Palermo. The production of cheese, oil, meat, honey, fruits, the handiwork of wood, iron, glass and the unique manufacture of fireworks are very important too.

SAN LEONE - Le Dune KM. 5
San Leone is a seaside destination, particularly appreciated for its places of entertainment along the beach in the summer evenings and weekends.
It is a windy area and therefore a real heaven for kite and windsurfers. Anyway the sea is very calm for long stretches, thanks to surfacing rocks close to the shore, which act as a barrier and so it is ideal for kids. San Leone is charming and nice during the winter too, when thanks to its mild weather you can enjoy a healthy and relaxing time.

PORTO EMPEDOCLE KM. 7
For ages Porto Empedocle has been one of the best and busiest ports of Sicily and it is still active for trading and fishing. The town is dominated by the ancient and imposing Carlo V tower and it has a long shore with wide and sandy beaches. In Porto Empedocle there is the native house of Luigi Pirandello, now seat of an interesting museum. Here you can find pictures, original letters, theatre bills, the collar of the Nobel prize he won in 1934 and much more. In the garden, near a solitary pine tree, the ashes of the writer are buried. Pirandello’s work was deeply inspired by the various human environment of Porto Empedocle. Andrea Camilleri, a famous writer of today, was born in Porto Empedocle too. His novels are set in the imaginary town of “Vigata” and deal with the childhood the writer spent in Porto Empedocle.

REALMONTE KM. 8
The small town of Realmonte is unique and world famous for its Scala dei Turchi: a white cliff where wind and rain shaped natural steps. The play of colours is wonderful: the sunlight makes brighter the white rocks between the sky and the blue sea, a real heaven. Other important sites in Realmonte are the Villa Romana (I A.D.) with its wonderful mosaics, columns and private thermae, and the church inside the salt mine with its incredible sculptures made of this precious mineral and with its acoustics which is better than an opera house.

PUNTA BIANCA KM. 10
Punta Bianca is a beautiful and wild cliff sheer above the sea. In the course of centuries wind and rain have formed strange and unusual shapes on the rock walls, which change their colour at sunset leaving the observers speechless. Among the rocks there are little bays with golden sand. The sea water here is very crystalline.

SICULIANA KM. 10
Siculiana is dominated by an old Arabian castle and it has some significant monuments and rare archaeological finds. Its true flower is Giallonardo beach: a very long coastline with golden sand, defined by an impressive gypsum cliff, whose crystals create vivid light plays. The beach is ideal for long and unforgettable walkings and it is washed by a nice blue and limpid sea.

PALMA DI MONTECHIARO KM. 25
Palma di Montechiaro was founded by the dukes Carlo and Giulio Tomasi, ancestors of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Tomasi’s famous novel “Il Gattopardo” was deeply inspired by the significant artistic wealth of the town which dedicated to him a literary museum. The town was planned according to a deeply mystic and religious project: then a lot of baroque churches, a monastery, a convent, with their valuable paintings, statues and relics of saints. Here you find also the ruins of the imposing Chiaramontano castle, built on a rock sheer above the sea. The beach of Marina di Palma of is
important for its very fine sand and its crystalline sea. The confectionery has here an old tradition and it is very appreciated. You can still buy the typical sweets with almonds made by the nuns living in the convent of Palma.

TORRE SALSA KM. 30
Torre Salsa natural reserve is an oasis of uncontaminated nature where you can admire gypsum-cliffs alternating with calcareous marls, a lush vegetation, a very rare fauna and a clear and crystalline sea. The tower, an old sighting point, dominates the top of a small clayey promontory. All around there are agricultural areas, nature trails and picnic facilities. Torre Salsa is one of the remaining jewels of the coast with its wild orchids, rare junipers, turtles and tortoises. You will never forget your stay in this wonderful natural area.

ERACLEA MINOA KM. 40
The ruins of the old Greek town called Eraclea Minoa lie on the edge of a solitary hill by the sea. The story tells Crete’s king Minos pursued Daedalus to Eraclea in order to punish him for helping Ariadne and Theseus to orientate in the labyrinth. Finally Minos was killed by Kaos, king of the local population of Sicani, who provided Daedalus with a refuge. At the foot of the old town there is the nice and long beach of Capo Bianco, surrounded by a beautiful pine wood and white rock walls. Here you find the charming natural reserve “Foce del Fiume Platani”, where flock of migratory birds arrive from Africa. The reserve has a luxuriant and various flora and it is one of most suggestive and interesting coastlines in Sicily

LICATA KM. 50
In Licata you can meet archeological, architectural, artistic, sea- and landscape- beauties, in a kind of museum en plein air. From Sant’Angelo Castle situated at the top of the town you can enjoy a wonderful view of the historic centre, where old and valuable baroque monuments are next to more recent Art Nouveau town houses and buildings designed at the beginning of the twentieth century by famous local architects. Licata’s coastline is very charming and presents for about 20 km sandy stretches, rocks and little bays. The area of the harbour is full of restaurants and lively night-clubs.

SCIACCA KM. 60
Sciacca is one of the most lively and pleasant towns of the province. It enjoys a nice weather, a wonderful sea, beautiful monuments and gardens. It is well known for its ancient thermae.
The legend tells Daedalus escaping from Crete discovered here the caves of Kronio Mount. Its exhaling water vapours together with the waters flowing in the “Valle dei Bagni” have innumerable therapeutic effects on many pathologies and on beauty treatments and slimming cures. Sciacca’s true flower is handicraft: ceramists’ workshops animate the streets of the town with their traditional potteries, characterized by bright colours and various shapes, together with master craftsmen of the typical local coral (Corallium Rubrum) that is unique and very rare and makes various objects precious. Sciacca’s carnival is well known. Artists, choreographers, poets, musicians and workmen collaborate on the carnival’s organization every year. Everywhere in town you can enjoy the festival with its masqueraders, plays of colours, music and dance. It is very funny and it will catch you in a moment.

PORTO PALO DI MENFI KM. 90
It has been awarded the “blue flag” by Fee (Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe) in recognition of the excellent health of its sea-water and environmental quality. The coastline is characterized by charming dunes of very fine sand which change their shape according to the direction of the wind. Here you can find sea-lilies, dwarf palms, turtles and birds of various species. Since the Greeks’ domination, Menfi is famous for its wine, which is nowadays the main element of its economy. Selinunte is one of the most beautiful and representative sites of the classical world and with its 270 hectares it is the largest archeological park in Europe. This old Greek city has an extraordinary position: you can walk through the ruins of the temples, among solitary imposing columns, just in front of the sea, near the most beautiful and uncontaminated beaches of Sicily.

CALTAGIRONE - PIAZZA ARMERINA KM. 60
Caltagirone is well known in the world for its pottery. The streets of the town are animated by a lot of little shops displaying the typical handicracfts. The tradition of pottery in Caltagirone is very old and dates back to the Muslin and Norman age. The staircase, which connects the upper with the lower part of the town, is very suggestive: 142 steps made of majolica with a variety of colours and decorations.

PIAZZA ARMERINA - CALTAGIRONE KM. 60
Piazza Armerina is a splendid city of art with its monuments, churches, old baroque palaces. When you walk through the streets of the historic city centre, you have the pleasant feeling to live again the old magnificence of the town and to be immersed completely in an atmosphere teeming with culture. The true flower of Piazza Armerina is the Roman Villa del Casale, residence of an aristocrat of the Roman Empire, appointed by Unesco as world heritage site. Its splendid mosaics stretch for more than 3500 sq. m. and portray epic, mythological and everyday life scenes and accurate depictions of animals and plants, offering an inimitable fresco of Roman civilization.
